Autumn is one of our favourite seasons for creating cocktails. There is still room for fresh, bright flavours but autumn cocktails give us the chance to start introducing richer fruits, warming spirits, fresh herbs and a little more depth.

Whether you are experimenting with cocktails at home or planning a seasonal cocktail menu for an autumn event, a good place to start is with one seasonal flavour and a spirit that naturally complements it.

Here are five autumn cocktail flavour combinations we love.

1. Pear + Calvados

If there is one combination that tastes like early autumn to us, it is this.

Pear is delicate, juicy and naturally sweet, while Calvados brings apple, warmth and a little complexity. The two sit beautifully together without creating an overly sweet drink.

Add lemon for freshness, or introduce herbs such as sage or thyme if you want to take it in a slightly more savoury direction.

Try it: Pear + Calvados + Lemon + Sage

2. Fig + Bourbon

Fig has a rich, almost jammy quality, which makes it a natural partner for bourbon. The vanilla, oak and caramel notes of the spirit give the fruit more depth while still allowing the fig to come through.

For an event cocktail menu, this is a lovely combination when you want something that feels unmistakably autumnal without immediately reaching for cinnamon and heavier spices.

Try it: Fig + Bourbon + Lemon + Rosemary

3. Blackberry + Gin

A simple pairing, but a very good one.

The sweet-tart flavour of blackberry works beautifully with the botanical character of gin. Keep it fresh with citrus, add thyme for a more herbal note, or lengthen it with soda for something lighter.

It is also a great option for cocktails at events because that deep blackberry colour looks particularly beautiful in the glass.

Try it: Gin + Blackberry + Lemon + Thyme

4. Apple + Dark Rum

Apple does not have to mean apple pie.

Pair fresh or cloudy apple with dark or aged rum and you get something richer and rounder, with the spice and caramel notes of the rum doing much of the work for you.

A touch of ginger, cardamom or even a pinch of sea salt can make this classic autumn flavour feel much more interesting.

Try it: Dark Rum + Apple + Ginger + Lime

5. Plum + Cognac

Plum has that lovely balance of sweetness and acidity that works particularly well as we move into autumn.

Pair it with Cognac and you get warmth, subtle spice and plenty of depth without losing the freshness of the fruit. A little lemon keeps things bright, while honey can soften the edges and bring everything together.

For an autumn event, it is an elegant option when you want something seasonal without leaning too heavily into traditional autumn spices.

Try it: Plum + Cognac + Lemon + Honey

Of course, we could not talk about our favourite autumn cocktail flavours without putting one of them to work behind the Shake&Stir bar.

For our seasonal serve, Fig & Grove, we started with the first pairing on our list: pear + Calvados.

From there, we introduced sage syrup, fresh lemon and fig leaf soda to create a drink that feels distinctly autumnal while still being fresh and light.

Fig & Grove

40ml Calvados

15ml Pear Purée

10ml Sage Syrup

15ml Lemon Juice

Top with Fig Leaf Soda

The Calvados gives us that beautiful orchard fruit base, pear softens it, sage introduces a subtle savoury note and lemon keeps everything fresh. Fig leaf soda finishes the drink with a delicate green aroma.

The result sits somewhere between the last warm days of summer and the beginning of proper autumn. It is fresh enough for a drinks reception, but with enough depth to feel right for the season.

And that is usually how we approach seasonal cocktail menus at Shake&Stir: start with what is in season, find the spirit that brings out its best qualities, and build from there.

Whether you are making one drink at home or planning cocktails for a room full of guests, you do not need dozens of complicated ingredients. Sometimes a great cocktail simply starts with two flavours that work beautifully together.

If there is one ingredient taking the drinks world by storm this summer, it is matcha. From speciality cafés to cocktail bars, this vibrant green tea has become one of the season’s biggest trends thanks to its earthy flavour, striking colour and versatility. While it is most commonly enjoyed in lattes, bartenders have been experimenting with matcha in cocktails and one pairing has stood out in particular – tequila. The fresh, crisp character of a quality blanco tequila complements matcha beautifully, creating a cocktail that is refreshing, balanced and surprisingly easy to enjoy.

Our Cloud Nine is a light and modern take on the classic Paloma. Fresh lime, tequila and pink grapefruit soda come together to create a bright citrus base, while a silky matcha foam adds a smooth, earthy finish. A Tajín rim ties everything together with a subtle chilli-lime kick, making every sip refreshing and full of flavour.

Non-alcoholic cocktails are not a novelty these days. However, with an abundance of choices, there is a high chance of running into poor quality options. We’ve tried many non-alcoholic sparkling wines in the past, and unfortunately, 90% of the time, the price to quality point just wasn’t there.

In most people’s minds cocktails represent delicious and mysterious concoctions which need to be prepared by expert mixologists behind gorgeous looking bars. This can easily scare away someone with no experience form picking up a few bottles and try mixing their own drinks from the comfort of their home. Truth to be told, being a cocktail bartender is no easy feat, but the reasons behind this haven’t got too much to do with the making of a single drink, but with loads of different factors which will not be relevant to you as a home bartender. Just by following a few simple steps, you will be able to surprise your guests with some delicious drinks they will certainly remember.

For most of us, cocktail lovers, classic drinks such as the Martini or Old Fashioned will always hold a special place in our hearts. Could it be that drinking them ‘takes us’ to an era or a place where we feel more adventurous and ready to face our villains like James Bond fights Le Chiffre in the famous Casino Royale? Maybe it is the complete opposite, and sipping on a strong classic relaxes us and makes us think of innovative ideas like Don Draper in the captivating Mad Men?

As we are mostly back into normality and events have been running at full steam in recent months, I find myself attending more and more networking events once again. Inevitably, the question of ‘What do you do?’ needs answering on a regular basis and the standard response has been well polished over the years. However, when it comes to the part where I introduce one of our key strengths – designing BESPOKE COCKTAILS – it seems to confuse a lot of people.

And why is that?

First of all, let’s start with the word INSTAGRAMMABLE and what it actually means. According to the urban dictionary the term is used to describe a picture that is worth posting/sharing on instagram. However, it raises a question: how do you measure ‘Worth’? There are 95 million photos and videos shared on Instagram daily (most likely this number has already increased) and only a small fraction of these go viral.
